Services usually last about one hour, and dress can be casual, although some people like to dress up for the occasion. It can vary, depending on who is organizing it, the season of the year, or current projects.
The rhythm and structure of the services can vary a bit, depending on the theme and who leads the service. Here's an example for a typical service:

The rhythm and structure of the services can vary a bit, depending on the theme and who leads the service. Here's an example for a typical service:
- Prelude
A piece of music is played to set the tone for the service. - Welcome
A few words of welcome to the attendees are delivered by whoever leads the service. - Chalice Lighting
The flaming chalice is the symbol of UU and is lit to create a sacred space for our coming together. - Hymn No.1
Hymns are sung together by all attendees, accompanied by guitars and usually selected from the UU hymnals Singing the Living Tradition and Singing the Journey. - First Reading
A short text or poem relating to the theme of the service is read out loud, often by a volunteer, sometimes in unison. - Sharing of Joys and Sorrows
Anyone may light a candle as an expression of a joy or sorrow in their life that they would like to share. - Story for All Ages
A member of the congregation reads a children's story, usually one that is related to the theme of the service. Children are encouraged to gather around the reader to hear the story. Afterwards they leave the service for RE (religious education/exploration). - Offertory
Donations, which of course are voluntary, are collected. - Second Reading
- Meditation
A moment of silent reflection, sometimes preceded by a meditation reading. - Hymn No.2
- Homily
The center piece of the service, a member of our congregation or an invited guest speaker deliver a homily that is usually 15-20 minutes long. - Hymn No.3
- Benediction
- Extinguishing the Chalice
The chalice which was lit at the beginning of the service is extinguished, closing the service.
